Series PV32W · Poppet Valve Design

3/2-Way Valves for Air and Vacuum – PV32W Series Poppet Valves

When a 3/2-way valve needs to operate under vacuum, the design is what matters. The PV32W series is built as a poppet valve and switches cleanly even when there's no operating pressure between the ports, but vacuum instead. STASTO offers two versions: PV32W-V for the vacuum range –1…0 bar and PV32W-A for compressed air 3…10 bar – each available in connection sizes 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1 1/2" and 2".

Advantages

Why a seat valve for vacuum applications?

The design determines whether a 3/2 way valve stays sealed under vacuum. The PV32W series combines seat valve technology with large nominal sizes and a clear choice of electrical options.

01

Tight switching instead of slide gaps

Seat valves seal against a valve seat using an elastic seal. There is no moving slide with guide clearance — precisely the point where false air can be drawn into the system under vacuum.

02

Two versions, one modular platform

PV32W-V operates with an external pilot air connection (M5 or 1/8" depending on size), PV32W-A with internal pilot air. Same design, same connection sizes – switching between air and vacuum circuits requires no new installation dimension.

03

Flow rate up to 60,000 Nl/min

From 5,500 Nl/min at 1/2" to 60,000 Nl/min at 2". This covers even large suction volumes and fast venting cycles without needing to parallel multiple valves.

04

Electrical setup matched to your control system

Actuation electric/spring, function NC, coil type SCN with 32 mm connector width. Coils available in 12 VDC, 24 VDC and 115 V/50–60 Hz, plus device connectors as standard version or with LED and VDR. Other voltages on request.

Guide

Poppet valve or spool valve – what's the difference?

A 3/2 way valve has three ports and two switching positions. However, how reliably it stays sealed under vacuum does not depend on the switching function, but on the design of the sealing system.

3/2-way Operating Principle, NC Design

Three Ports
Supply (pressure or vacuum), working port, and exhaust or venting.
NC – Normally Closed
In the rest position, the supply port is blocked and the working port is vented to the third port.
Energized Position
When the coil is energized, the valve connects the supply and working ports.
Electric/Spring Actuation
When power is removed, the spring returns the valve to its initial position – this design is used consistently throughout the PV32W series.

Design: Poppet Instead of Spool

Spool Valve
A piston moves within a bore, sealing is achieved via seal rings along the spool; a minimal guide clearance is inherent to this design.
Seat valve
A sealing element lifts off a valve seat and, upon closing, seats flush again — with no guide gap at the sealing point.
Relevance in Vacuum
Under vacuum, false air can be drawn into the system through gaps; the seat-type design is therefore the key argument for the PV32W series.

Planning pilot air correctly

External pilot air (PV32W-V)
Pilot control is not tapped from the valve line — a design necessity in the vacuum circuit. Pilot port M5 or 1/8" depending on size.
Internal pilot air (PV32W-A)
The compressed-air version uses the available operating pressure of 3…10 bar for pilot control.
Design data
For a reliable design, we need port size, flow rate, pressure or vacuum range, coil voltage, and whether external pilot air is available.

Fields of Application

Typical applications

The PV32W series is used wherever switching between vacuum and venting is required, or where a 3/2 way valve needs to remain reliably tight even at low pressure differentials.

Handling and Vacuum Grippers

Control of suction cups and gripper bars: building up vacuum, holding it, and venting on demand. With short cycle times, the venting cross-section is decisive – this is where the large nominal size of the bigger versions pays off.

Packaging and Vacuum Packaging Technology

Evacuating chambers and bags, followed by venting. The external pilot air port of the PV32W-V ensures that pilot control operates independently of process pressure.

Central Vacuum Supply in Plant Engineering

Shutting off and switching suction lines as well as connecting individual consumers to a shared vacuum source.

Laboratory and Test Engineering

Applications with defined vacuum levels, where leakage directly distorts the measurement result. Media compatibility is clarified per variant based on the datasheet.

Standard Compressed Air Tasks

With the PV32W-A, the same design for 3…10 bar: venting cylinders, actuating single-acting actuators, switching auxiliary circuits.

Assembly and Test Lines

Vacuum-assisted positioning and holding of components as well as venting at the end of the cycle – with port sizes up to 2" also suited for large suction volumes.

Configuration & Delivery

Configuration, availability, and delivery

The PV32W series is available from STASTO not only as a bare valve, but also as a preconfigured unit consisting of valve, solenoid coil, and device connector. This reduces the number of line items in your order and prevents mismatched combinations of connector width and voltage.

Configuration, availability, and delivery

Preconfigured order numbers

Identifiable by numbers such as PV32W1S6E10V-SCN02400-C003-32-6 (valve 1", coil 24 VDC, standard connector) or PV32W1S6E12V-SCN11550-C003-32-6 (valve 1/2", coil 115 V/50–60 Hz).

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about 3/2-way valves for air and vacuum

Quick answers on function, design and selection of the PV32W series.

How does a 3/2-way valve work?

A 3/2-way valve has three ports and two switching positions: it either connects the working port to the supply or vents it to the third port. In the PV32W series, actuation is electric/spring – the solenoid switches, the spring resets.

What does "normally closed" (NC) mean?

NC (normally closed) means: in the de-energized rest position, the pressure or vacuum port is shut off and the working port is vented to the third port. All variants of the PV32W series are designed with NC function.

Why use a poppet valve instead of a spool valve for vacuum?

A poppet valve seals against a valve seat via an elastic seal and has no moving spool with running clearance. This clearance is precisely the point at a spool valve where, under vacuum, false air can be drawn into the system.

What pressure range do PV32W-V and PV32W-A cover?

The PV32W-V operates in the vacuum range of –1…0 bar, the PV32W-A in the compressed air range of 3…10 bar. Design, port sizes and flow values are identical for both versions.

Why does the vacuum version require external pilot air?

In a vacuum circuit, there is no operating pressure available to feed the pilot control. That's why the PV32W-V has an external pilot air port – depending on the size, either M5 or 1/8".

What connection sizes and flow rates are available?

The PV32W series is available in 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1 1/2" and 2", corresponding to nominal sizes 15, 20, 25, 40 and 50 mm. Flow rate ranges from 5,500 Nl/min at 1/2" to 60,000 Nl/min at 2".

Which solenoid coils and connectors are compatible?

All PV32W variants use the SCN-type coil with a 32 mm connector width, including SCN01200 (12 VDC), SCN02400 (24 VDC) and SCN11550 (115 V/50–60 Hz). Matching connectors are the C003-32-6 (standard, 0…250 V AC/DC) and C003-32-LV-2 (with yellow LED and VDR, 24 V AC/DC); other voltages available on request.

What information do you need for sizing?

For a reliable sizing, we need the connection size, required flow rate, pressure or vacuum range, coil voltage, and whether external pilot air is available. Material and temperature resistance details are provided per variant in the datasheet.
